Transform Your Outdoor Space With Quality Artificial Grass - Installed by Coby's.

Artificial Turf Installation in Wellington

Over the past five years, synthetic grass has become increasingly popular in both residential and commercial landscapes across New Zealand. Advances in artificial yarn technology now make it possible to achieve a realistic lawn look and feel, offering a reliable alternative to natural grass.

Artificial turf provides a clean, usable surface year-round - no mud, no mowing. It's especially well-suited to families with kids or pets, and works just as well in small shaded corners as it does across full backyards, pool surrounds, or outdoor areas connected to decks. Low maintenance and always tidy, it’s a smart option for modern outdoor living.

After considerding artificial grass for our yard for a few months we finally pulled the trigger and chose Coby's as our installers, and we are happy we did. Our backyard didn't get enough sun for grass to grow properly so we love how the turf look effortlessly flawless all year round. It's also made it easier for us to clean up after the dogs.

It looks great and the price was very reasonable - I'd recommend Coby's to anyone looking to install artificial grass in their yard.

Artificial Grass FAQs

How much does artificial grass cost?

Artificial grass is generally priced by the square metre, with most products falling between $46 and $86 + GST per m², depending on the quality and style you choose.

Important note: Although the pricing is based on square metres, the turf itself is sold by the lineal metre. Most rolls are approximately 3.7 metres wide, so purchasing one lineal metre of turf at that width will give you 3.7 m² of coverage.

Supply & Installation Estimates

The cost to professionally install artificial turf depends on the size of the area and the preparation involved. Here's a general guide based on a typical 30–100 m² project:

  • On an existing base (such as concrete, patio, decking, or compacted aggregate):
    $80 to $130 + GST per m²
  • On a natural lawn or soil area (involves removing up to 90mm of soil, laying and compacting new aggregate, and installing turf):
    $105 to $150 + GST per m²
  • Small areas (under 30 m²) usually range higher due to fixed costs, around
    $150 to $300 + GST per m²

Comparing Costs

While synthetic turf has a higher initial cost than natural grass, it typically pays off over time through reduced maintenance and no need for watering, mowing, or re-seeding. In many cases, the total installed cost is similar to concrete paving and significantly cheaper than timber decking like Kwila.

What Affects the Price?

Several factors can influence the total cost of your installation:

  • The shape and layout of the area
  • The specific turf product selected
  • Site access and location
  • Precision work around paving, edging, or other features
  • Whether timber edging or containment is needed
  • The amount of soil removal or base preparation required
  • Any drainage work that must be included

How long does artificial grass last?

Our artificial turf products come with warranties ranging from 7 to 15 years, depending on the specific type. For full details, please refer to our warranty terms and conditions.

With routine care and proper use, artificial grass can often last 10 to 20 years, even beyond its warranty period.

What Affects the Lifespan?

Several key factors influence how long synthetic turf will hold up over time, including material quality, how the area is used, and exposure to weather.

Here's what contributes to durability:

  • UV Protection: Our turf includes high-grade UV stabilisers, helping prevent early fading or discolouration — even under New Zealand’s harsh sun.
  • Primary Backing: We use a double-layer polypropylene cloth, UV rated to 200g/m², compared to the 141g/m² rating commonly found in standard woven backings.
  • Secondary Backing: Instead of SBR Latex (which can absorb moisture and bacteria), we use a tough, industrial-grade secondary backing that's fully recyclable and designed to resist wear and degradation. If you’re interested, we can share lab test comparisons.
  • Dtex Rating: Dtex refers to the yarn density — thicker blades mean more strength. Our products feature a high dtex for added resilience.
  • Stitch Rate: Stitch rate refers to how closely the yarn rows are sewn. While thicker yarns often limit stitching density, we’ve engineered our products to combine high dtex with one of the highest stitch rates possible — boosting overall strength and durability.

Can dogs pee and poo on artificial grass?

Absolutely — dogs can comfortably use artificial grass for both play and toileting. Our products are specifically designed with pets in mind and are built to handle daily use with ease.

Why Pet Owners Choose Our Turf:

  • Drains Freely, Doesn’t Hold Odours:
Our artificial grass doesn’t absorb urine, so smells don’t linger. The free-draining surface allows liquid to pass through easily, keeping your lawn cleaner and fresher.
  • Easy to Maintain:
Pet mess can be picked up and removed just like on real grass. The turf can be hosed down when needed, and for deeper cleaning, we offer an effective turf enzyme spray designed to break down bacteria and reduce odour from dog waste.
  • Safe Materials:
All materials used are 100% non-toxic, making it safe for pets and people alike.
  • Built for Durability:
Our turf features a tough, industrial-grade secondary backing that’s fully recyclable and far more resilient than traditional SBR latex, which tends to absorb moisture and bacteria. We’re happy to share lab test results that show the difference.
  • Stronger Installation for Pet-Friendly Homes:
For homes with multiple dogs or high activity, we can install a timber plinth around the edge of the lawn. This adds extra strength and helps secure the turf firmly to the base, making it much harder to dig or pull up — ideal for energetic pets.

Is artifical grass safe for kids?

All of our artificial grass products are completely non-toxic and safe for children. Whether they’re crawling, running, or rolling around, kids can enjoy our turf without concern — it’s soft underfoot and free from harmful materials.

What Sets Our Turf Apart?

Unlike some other synthetic grass brands in New Zealand, we avoid using substances that may pose health risks. Our products do not contain:

  • Lead, mercury, or cadmium
  • SBR Latex (Styrene-Butadiene Rubber) – While technically considered non-toxic in its finished form, this backing material is made using chemicals that raise safety questions, especially during manufacturing. It's still widely used in many standard artificial grass products.
  • Rubber crumb infill made from old tyres – These infill materials often contain heavy metals and unknown compounds. Some studies have linked them to concerns about early puberty, behavioural effects, and even potential cancer risk in children.
